Push notifications on our smartphone are the subtle reminders of life outside the moment. Be it emails to read, text messages to respond to or a list of groceries to pickup after work, push notifications guide us everyday. But more times than not, notifications come in at the wrong time. Email notifications popup on your drive home or notifications for your favorite mobile games interrupt your midday meeting at work. Would it not be nice to set customized push notifications based on your location, so the they were displayed when they’re most relevant?
Dot is a product I discovered on Kickstarter that allows you to customize push notifications based on location. Dot uses Bluetooth technology to tell your phone precisely where you are. It then determines what notifications to send you based on your surroundings. The technology uses your location to display customized push notifications.
Dot comes loaded with many features that make it a plus for productivity, such as automatic app launching, digital Post-It notes, location updates, and glance-able “smart” notifications, all based on location.
Digital Post-Its and smart notifications are my particular favorites. With Digital Post-It’s, you can simply leave a note that another Dot user will receive as a push notification, such as “take-out the trash” through a Dot in your kitchen or “pick up the kids from school” through a Dot in your garage that you pass before leaving for work. Dots are shareable, allowing multiple people to use one Dot and allowing you to control who you want to see certain notifications.
With smart notifications, Dot can act as a physical signal through a colored display. For example, you could place a Dot on a roommates door that will light up if they’re home. You could also chose to have it emit a certain color for a status like “Do not disturb!”. Your location determines these customized push notifications.
Dot relies on Bluetooth 4.0 technology to pair the Dot with your smartphone within range. Each dot has a range of approximately 150 feet. With each battery lasting anywhere from six months to a year, you can rest assured you won’t miss out on an important notification due to a lifeless Dot. The batteries in each can easily be replaced in your own home.
Each Dot is totally configurable based on individual preference. Just take a look at some of the possibilities in the table below. They are endless, which is one of the exciting things about this product. Just think of the possibilities. Once you get adjusted to the technology, I really do believe it has the opportunity to organize and optimize your life. Plus, Dot is developer friendly. If a configuration you’d want to see isn’t available, chances are someone will be working on it soon, if they’re not already.
You control Dot through a smartphone application. It is available on both iOS and Android devices. Setup and configuration is easy and appears to be hassle free, making the experience even better. You can control everything with a few touches of your finger.
Dot is available on Kickstarter here. They set a campaign goal of $20,000 and have long surpassed it, nearing $50,000 at the time of writing. You can get a single Dot for as little as a $20 pledge and up to ten Dots for $170. They also give the option for you to determine a configuration for Dot so it works with your favorite blogs, television shows or smart home devices when arrives for pledges starting at $500 (ten Dots included with this price). The first Dot will ship in March 2017.
What do you think of Dot? Do you think they’d be useful in your life and increase productivity? Where would you put them? What would you use them for? Let us know in the comments.
