Each year, predators gain access to an alarming number of webcams worldwide. Invading user privacy, it is unknown just how frequent this criminal practice is worldwide. Regardless, it poses a true threat to consumers. In fact, even FBI Director James Comey and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg cover their webcams. You cannot put a price on protecting yourself and your family, or intellectual property and company computers.
I myself use a sticky note and tape to cover my webcam. Despite being inexpensive, my method really effects the aesthetics of my laptop. It is also a pain to remove and reattach whenever I try to use my webcam. Consequently, I had been searching for a more permanent and seamless solution for quite some time.
Fortunately, I stumbled across the IS|CC on Kickstarter the other day. IS|CC, or the Intelligent Security|Camera Cover, is being crowdfunded by Intelligent Security. Intelligent Security is a company focused on developing the most effective ways to protect your privacy by providing security and peace of mind. It is lead by Laurent Etienne, a young entrepreneur based in Geneva, Switzerland.
IS|CC Webcam Cover
The IS|CC is marketed as the “world’s thinnest, more ergonomic and seamless mechanical webcam privacy cover in the world.” The IS|CC addresses the many problems associated with using tap or other adhesives to cover your webcam.
It is 8 percent thinner than a credit card and does not affect the closing of a laptop, one of my main concerns. The cover is mechanical so you simply slide the metal cover left and right to cover and uncover your webcam. Fortunately, the cover does not touch your device so you do not have to worry about scratches or other damage. This is one of the simplest and most seamless designs I have seen on the market.
A more “permanent” solution (it could easily be removed), the IS|CC guarantees privacy and protects you from threats targeting your device’s webcam. I plan to use the IC|CC on my laptop, however you could also use it to cover the cameras on tablets or smartphones. It is being manufactured in silver and black.
The IS|CC is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. You can get your own with a pledge of just $11. Though it costs more than a piece of tape, I do not think you can put a price on privacy and piece of mind. You can back the IS|CC here.
